If you notice detergent residue on your clothes, it's easy to fix, and usually easy to prevent once you know the cause.
What causes residue:
- Overloading the washer: A packed load restricts water flow, so the pod may not fully dissolve or the detergent may not rinse out completely.
- Short or cold cycles: Pods need enough time and warm water to dissolve fully. Very short cycles can leave the pod partially dissolved.
- Low water flow or water level: If your machine uses a low water setting, or if hard water minerals interfere with dissolving, residue can build up.
- Placement in the drum: Pods dissolve best when placed directly in the drum before adding clothes, not in a dispenser drawer or buried under a full load.
How to remove existing residue:
- Soak the item in warm to hot water. If the residue has dried, let it soak until it softens or dissolves, this may take longer for set-in residue.
- Rewash the item on a warm or hot setting, and check that the residue is gone before drying.
To help prevent it going forward: avoid overloading your washer and place the pod directly in the drum before adding clothes.
